ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL
is the only major cathedral in England in the classical style. St. Paul's was re-built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1675 and 1710. This great church symbolised London's endurance during the blitz of the second World War and survived to provide the setting for many great state occasions. Fourth in a series of Queen's ware Christmas Plates featuring paintings by Alan Price
St Paul's Cathedral
The original Gothic Cathedral of St. Pauls was totally destroyed in the Great Fire of London in September 1666. In 1670 Sir Christopher Wren prepared a design for a new Cathedral to replace that ruined four years previously. After modifications the final design received the Royal Warrant of Approval in 1675 and the foundation stone was laid in that same year. The last stone was laid in 1708, and the Cathedral itself was finally completed in I711.
