During World War II, a sustained bombing of Britain by Nazi Germany called “The Blitz” forced many families to evacuate the city in search of safety. Royal Doulton honors the children who survived this war with their limited edition Children of the Blitz series. The evacuation of civilians in Britain during World War II was designed to save lives, particularly children; from the risks associated with aerial bombings of the cities by moving them to areas thought to be less at risk. Operation Pied Piper, which began on September 1, 1939, officially relocated more than 3.5 million people. For the 50th anniversary of Operation Pied Piper, the artists at the Royal Doulton studios created a limited edition series honoring the millions of brave children who endured this turbulent time in British history. In a world where old fashioned values seems to be long one, a tradition of craftsmanship still lives on in the Royal Doulton studios in which these figures are created. The artists and sculptors, potters and decorators, employ many of the same tried and tested techniques as their predecessors and use only the highest quality material such as fine bone china, natural pigments and deep lustre glaze
