Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. The daughter of James II. Anne succeeded her brother-in-law William III at the age of thirty-seven. She had previously married George of Denmark. Anne was a well-intentioned woman but without marked ability, so she was initially influenced by those around hen particularly the Duchess of Marlborough. Tory and High Church leaders. Anne's short reign from 1702 to 1714 brought a sense of unity and national purpose. England had begun a long journey towards world supremacy, becoming richer and more victorious than ever before. Anne's reign is especially remembered for the Act of Union with Scotland, in 1707. and the Queen Anne Bounty to improve church finances. There were also great improvements in architecture, with the work of Wren and Vanbrugh. literary output from famous names such as Swift. Pope. Steele and Addison, and marked developments in science by Newton. There were two major victories in the war against France and Spain. Anne attended cabinet meetings almost daily, taking decisions about the great war personally. She was conscientious and shrewd in politics and government, effectively aiding the Duke of Marlborough in his victories and the triumphs of the navy. Later life saw Anne become sad and lonely, having been deeply affected by childbirth and the deaths of her children. Some initiatives in her limited time as monarch, are still with us today. For example. Queen Anne initiated Royal Ascot with its splendid processions from Windsor to the race course. Also particularly visible now is her timely support of a movement to beautify the landscape which resulted in such magnificent buildings as Castle Howard. Blenheim Palace and some fifty lovely churches throughout England. Lawleys by Post commissioned the limited edition Queens of the Realm series in honor of the most memorable Queens in history. One new study will be released annually from 1986 to 1989. and after each edition of 5000 is fully subscribed it will never again be created.
