Neil Faulkner's design for the 2013 Figure of the Year is heart warming. Neil has portrayed a mother and her daughter on a warm sunny day as they enjoy a peaceful walk picking flowers and sharing secrets. The mother's soft pink dress is complimented by the pink band on her straw hat and her daughter is simply dressed in a floral patterned shift and matching ballet pumps. The close relationship of the mother and daughter has been sensitively captured by Neil through the loving maternal expression of the mother's face and by subtle positioning and posing of the two figures; to communicate the strength of the feelings of the pair  he has gently inclined their heads and positioned their shoulders so they bend in tenderly towards each other. The soft folds and creases of the mother's costume and the undulating hemline of the young girl's dress add graceful movement to the study. 'Graceful, feminine and enduring' are just some of the reasons that Royal Doulton figurines are as popular in the 21st century as they were a hundred years ago. With design inspiration drawn from a multitude of contemporary and historic sources including fashion, dance, jewellery and beauty the annual figurines represent the essence of Royal Doulton.
