Royal Doulton Lord Horatio Nelson D7236 Royal Doulton Character Toby Jug of the Year 2005 Lord Horatio Nelson D7236 Royal Doulton Character Toby Jug of the Year 2005
This hand-made and hand decorated character jug is beautifully modelled  in earthenware by a master craftsman and is the fifteenth character jug of the year.

Horatio Nelson was born in Norfolk on September 29th, 1758. At the age of 12 he entered the Navy and through hard work and dedication he quickly moved up the ranks to become Captain by the age of 20. Nelson fought many battles at sea and was victorious. However, he lost his right eye in 1794 during an attack in Corsica and later his right arm whilst fighting in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands in 1797. In 1798 Nelson failed to prevent the Napoleon invasion of Egypt but he successfully destroyed the French fleet at the Nile, by cunningly sending his troops to trap and outflank the opposition. In 1801 he triumphed again during the Battle of Copenhagen where he raided and defeated Danish fleets. Both of these remarkable victories marked his presence in Naval history and he became the hero of England. He was recognised for his skilful tactics, fearless nature and determination to reduce the growing French naval power and prevent the invasion of England. Nelson entered his final battle at Trafalgar on October 21st 1805 where he fought courageously to defeat French and Spanish fleets. On his ship, the 'Victory' he flew the signal "England expects that every man will do his duty" and his tactical methods ultimately destroyed the enemy. However victory was at the expense of Nelson's life and during the battle he was shot by a French sniper and died. He had successfully fulfilled his duty for his country. Lord Horatio Nelson was one England's greatest naval heroes and his reputation of courage and commitment to his country is widely recognised to this present day. The production of this delightful Character Jug is strictly limited to 2005, the year of issue.

Royal Doulton's brilliant creative director Charles Noke, was in his seventies when he introduced character jugs in 1933. And the Royal Doulton range of Toby Jugs, Mugs, Character Jugs has continued to expand, to include Characters from History and popular personalities, encompasing more than 300 different subjects and creating an exciting collecting challenge.
