Alfie, Jack and Patch herald a new series based on the iconic Bulldog, which was originally modelled by Royal Doulton's great art director Charles Noke and launched in 1941. Alfie is decorated with images synonymous the world over with London. From the majestic London Eye to the legendary black cab, and from the famous London bus to the distinctive Underground logo there's lots to love about this contemporary graphic design. The Bulldog breed was developed specifically for bull-baiting by crossing mastiffs and terriers; the dog's strength and tenacity enabled it to fight the bull almost without regard for injury. When bull-baiting and similar sports were outlawed by the Cruelty to Animals Act in 1835 the breed was in danger of extinction, but Bill George and other Victorian enthusiasts bred less aggressive animals and the new Bulldogs quickly became popular as reliable and lovable pet companions. Nevertheless, since the 19th century the Bulldog has symbolised the steely determination of the British character and given wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill's uncanny facial resemblance to the dog, with its many fleshy and drooping jowls, it was inevitable that the 1940s saw a plethora of Bulldog linked propaganda and imagery. In 1941 the Royal Doulton Bulldog model draped with a Union Jack flag was issued along with versions with different hats to represent the forces, whilst a final study combined the dog with a Derby style hat, bow tie and cigar in tribute to Churchill, himself. 70 years on, and in harmony with the nation's revived patriotic spirit during a year of rejoicing for royal and sporting achievement, our trio of studies take center stage. A new DD (for Doulton Dogs) reference system has been established and each fresh Bulldog study will be given a separate number.
